MIKE’S MESSAGE

Thanks, again, for your interest and support of the Roosevelt High School Alumni Association. 2013 has been an exciting year! If you haven’t taken time to read the State of the Association, I urge you to do so.

Did you see our school entry when it appeared in the St. Johns Parade on May 11 and the Portland Rose Festival Starlight Parade on June 1?

2013 St. Johns Parade

2013 St. Johns Parade

We had both a float (that represented our school building), plus a motorized RHS Football Helmet (created and maintained by Kadel’s Auto Body Shop). The float was designed and built as a partnership between Roosevelt High School and the Engineering Department of the University of Portland. Parade participants included Roosevelt High School Cheer Squad, RHS students, Kadel’s Auto Body Shop employees and Hustad Funeral Home volunteers. (And I was along for the ride, as well!)

Homecoming isn’t far away! Be sure to register EARLY for the annual Banquet. (September will be here before you know it!)

Please share this Newsletter with family and friends and be sure the word gets out there. Go Rough Riders!

Mike’s Message

I want to thank everyone for their generous support of the Roosevelt High School Alumni Association. People have come forward to give their time, their money and their advice during the past two formative years of RHSAA. And we could not be where we are today without that support.

Where are we today? I was so proud to report the State of the Association to the RHSAA Board of Directors during our meeting in January. And I want to share that information with the entire mailing list of alums via this eNewsletter. I encourage you to follow the link to this report and read the highlights of the accomplishments of RHSAA since its inception in the fall of 2011. I think you’ll be as proud as I am of the work we Rough Riders have accomplished together.

We’ve been advised to send you quarterly eNewsletters — which are then archived at the RHSAA website — and to augment these with occasional eBulletins whenever we’ve got anything notable to report. We want you to feel connected to Roosevelt High School, to the Roosevelt community and to your fellow alums. Please feel free to use the links at the website to contact RHSAA and let us know what you want to read about in these updates.

–Mike Verbout, RHSAA President

We Need YOUR Support!

Make a Year-End Gift

It’s Black and Gold Friday, Again!

During this giving season, please add the Roosevelt High School Alumni Association to your holiday gift list.

Roosevelt High School has only had an Alumni Association for a little over a year. Most of the start-up expenses associated with having an established nonprofit association have been paid out of the pockets of the individuals who started it.

2012-holiday-1

Our goal is to establish a vibrant, engaged Alumni organization that can work to support and forward the goals of our alma mater while perpetuating the pride we feel at having graduated from Roosevelt. And just as important, we want to offer the opportunity for connection and camaraderie within our Rough Rider community.

rhs-fun-2

In the past 15 months, we’ve been able to build our board of directors, obtain our 501(c)(3) designation from the IRS, establish a website and eNewsletter, start building an Alumni database, hold two Alumni dinners in association with Homecoming weekend and award 30 individuals recognition for their impressive accomplishments. We’ve also supported several projects for the good of RHS and the community — and want to do more.

Your donation — even of $10 — helps so much! All donations are tax deductible, and we’ve made it easy! Just follow the link below to our website and click the Donate button to use our secure PayPal account or choose one of the other available methods to give.

Homecoming

Homecoming 2012 brought victory to the Rough Riders and a great time for students, alumni and the community!

The 2nd Annual Homecoming Dinner was a time of reconnecting with classmates and recognizing special teachers and accomplished alumni.

The Homecoming Parade through the St. Johns business district brought cheers for the Homecoming Court and the Football Team. Many thanks to the Portland Police Bureau for traffic control and to Copy Pilot for donating the hundreds of balloons.

Baxter Auto Parts lead the effort to recruit volunteers to drive their convertibles in the parade and to display their cars on the Roosevelt campus in the 2nd Annual Vintage/Classic Auto Show.

And many thanks to Southlake Church and the volunteers from local St. Johns churches who served free BBQ to 500 people before the game.

The Civil War Car Smash on Saturday raised nearly $500 for the Roosevelt athletics department. A salute to Darrell Grenz (class of 1994) for his creativity and all the time and effort it took to make this happen.

Viewing of the Documentary “Undivided”

Many thanks to Tim Abbott (Class of 1971) for his efforts to provide the recent showing of SouthLake Church’s film “UnDivided” at the St. Johns Theater & Pub (McMenamins) on October 7. A large group turned out to see this amazing movie.

Roosevelt Theater

Include Roosevelt when planning your holiday social activities. Gather a group of friends and have a dinner and theater night. Enjoy the classic tale “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens performed by our own State and National Roosevelt High School Drama Champs!

Here’s your chance to attend a FREE showing of “UnDivided” — a one-hour film you’ll never forget that focuses on tearing down walls, building bridges and helping save Roosevelt High School.

SouthLake Church has ‘invested in eternity’ — they believe in changing lives with their actions. They ‘give away the goodness of God’ by providing their time, energy and money in their relationship with Roosevelt High School. The goal is to help, but members of the congregation believe they gain as much as they give… “I have honestly learned more from them than I feel that I will ever be able to give them. They have completely changed my life.”

“I have honestly learned more from them…”

This movie is the story about a partnership that has engaged people of all ages, not just the students and their church mentors. Clothing and food — plus essentials like deordorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste — make a drastic change in day-to-day life.

New track to be dedicated at Homecoming Game

Have you seen the new NCAA-standard track at Roosevelt?  The recently upgraded Roosevelt High School athletic complex is now open and being used by Rough Riders and the community.

The all-season running surface is the third phase of the Theodore Roosevelt Athletic Complex (TRAC) and completes the upgrade to the football/soccer field and facilities.  For more information about the TRAC campaign, or to make a donation, visit www.stjohnstrac.com.

The recently upgraded RHS Field and Track – September 2012 (photo courtesy of Michael Bergmann, St. Johns TRAC)

Besides being the updated home of the Rough Riders, the resurfaced athletic complex was built to meet NCAA Division I collegiate competition standards, which will allow nearby University of Portland, Portland State University and Concordia University to host meets at RHS.

The upgraded track facility is also helping to train future Rough Rider athletes through a new feeder school program of runners who use the new track and facilities to practice.  The newly formed St. Johns TRAC Club looks to debut this fall and feature athletes from six of Roosevelt’ feeder schools (Astor, George, Caesar Chavez, James John, Sitton and Peninsula).  For club information and meet schedule, visit www.crpusa.com/p/st-johns-trac-club.html.

The new track surface will be dedicated during Homecoming Week as part of the pre-game ceremonies on Friday October 5th, 2012.  The dedication ceremonies will start at 6:00 PM with a community mile run immediately before the Rough Riders kick-off against the visiting Madison Senators at 7:20 PM.   We’ll see you there!

Go Riders!
