An Athletics Update – November 2017

The new athletic director at Roosevelt, Sanjay Bedi, is very excited to work with the alumni association and help us promote games and alumni involvement! He has written up an update for us to share with you to keep you in the loop on all things sports at Roosevelt. Read more:

Interim Football Coach Tim Price during an early season practice.

We were off to a rough start with changes in the Football Coaching staff but we were able to stabilize the program and get a good number of kids out. We had both a Varsity and JV2/Frosh team. The varsity team had a tough season but the kids competed hard in every way coming away with a big homecoming win against Wilson. We hired an interim coach for the fall – Tim Price who did a great job with the program. We will be opening the position and interviewing for the 2018 season.

Varsity Volleyball Team.

Girls Volleyball, Girls Soccer and Boys Soccer were all very competitive this season with young teams. They are continuing to get better and we have had good turnout for all 3 programs.

Cross Country had some growth and success this season culminating with qualifying 2 runners (Lammi Kalil and Abdi Hussein) for the State Tournament. Lammi took a podium position with an 8th place finish at State.

We are off and running with winter sports starting on Monday, November 13th . We have tryouts for Girls & Boys Basketball as well as Wrestling and Swimming. The Dance Team will also be competing this winter. We recently hired a new Girls Head Basketball Coach – Michael Bontemps as well as a new Boys Head Basketball Coach – Yusuf Leary, who has been an assistant the past few years. The Wrestling program will be coached by returning coach Eric Azersky. Returning Dance Team Coach Mandy Mucci continues to build and develop a strong Dance Team and we recently hired alumni Jenny McInroy as our new Cheerleading Coach. Teach and returning Coach James Duckworth will be coaching the Swim Team.

We are in the final process of hiring a new Head Baseball Coach and will be hiring Head Girls & Boys Tennis coaches as well. Kelsey Green (now Kelsey Porter) will return to continue coaching a very strong Girls Softball Program.

If people have questions or would like to come by and get a tour of the building and athletic facilities please feel free to contact me.
